For Austinites searching for fun activities to enjoy before summer ends, the city provides a multitude of performances for theatre fans wishing to escape the July heat. The Daily Texan compiled a list of entertaining performances for readers to attend.
Now until Aug. 17, Zilker Theatre Productions is performing “Legally Blonde, the Musical” at the Beverly S. Sheffield Zilker Hillside Theater. Performances are at 8:15 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, so although the venue is outside, the weather will have cooled off by showtime. Admission is free, but attendees may adopt some of the dog actors from the Austin Animal Center featured throughout the run. Sensor-friendly resources are available every Thursday and ASL-interpreted performances take place on July 18 and July 26.
“Summer Stock Austin 20 Seasons Spectacular: A Broadway Extravaganza”
On July 20 at 6 p.m., Summer Stock Austin and Texas Performing Arts are celebrating SSA’s 20th season. The celebration at McCullough Theatre includes refreshments with singing and dancing from notable program alumni and current participants. Vincent Jamal Hooper, an SSA alumnus who plays Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King” on Broadway, will host the event. Tickets can be purchased online through TPA starting at $75.
The “Shrek the Musical” tour stops at Bass Concert Hall on July 21. Though the show starts at 6 p.m., the lobby doors open at 4:30 p.m. for attendees to enjoy Shrek-themed activities on the sixth floor prior to taking their seats. Tickets can be bought online through TPA starting at $34, and attendees can buy three tickets to get one free through a family-pack deal.
SSA and TPA production’s rendition of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” will run at McCullough Theatre from July 27 through Aug. 11. Tickets should be purchased online through TPA and start at $45 with discounted $40.50 tickets for educators, military, seniors and students.
Award-winning film, TV and Broadway actress and singer Idina Menzel brings her “Take Me or Leave Me” tour to The Paramount Theatre at 8 p.m. on July 30. Tickets start at $35 and can be purchased on the theatre’s website. The tour shows off hits from Menzel’s entire career including some from musicals “Wicked,” “Rent,” “Frozen” and her own albums.
“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”
From July 31 to Sept. 8, ZACH Theatre is producing “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” There is an ASL performance on Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m. and a Pay What You Will Week July 30 through Aug. 4. Available for purchase on July 30, The PWYW Week offers 50 tickets each performance where attendees can pay as much as they’d like for their ticket. Tickets can be purchased online through the theatre.
