Austin garners a reputation as an epicenter for the artistic with its free-thinking culture that harbors countless creatives. Just in the next few weeks, the city will host several worthwhile art events for the community. The Daily Texan compiled a list of art events from laid-back lessons to nights of spectating the area’s most unique pieces.
ATX Art Nights – July 23 at 6:30 p.m.
For consistent monthly events that help develop one’s artistic abilities and connect with like-minded people, visit @artnights_atx on Instagram for their event dates. On July 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., attendees can practice their sculpting skills with air dry clay painting at Captain Quack’s Coffeehouse. Tickets are available on Eventbrite, and tickets for all of their events typically become available two weeks prior to the occasion.
Acrylic Pouring Workshop – July 26 at 7 p.m.
Cherrywood Treehouse Art Studio caters to creatives of all ages with events such as an acrylic pouring class this Friday. Pick and mix preferred colors to create canvases for decor, gifts or mementos of a unique night out. Paint pouring can cause messes, so attendees might end up staining their hands with a kaleidoscope of colors.
Artist Talks at Julia C. Butridge Gallery – July 31 at 7 p.m.
The Julia C. Butridge Gallery temporarily hosts the works of artist Kaelyn Provost’s abstract, empowerment pieces, Natasha Kanevski’s monochromatic artwork and Danika Ostrowski’s Texas-themed paintings. All three talents present drastically different pieces to the table, so at least one of these three artists will likely suit any gallerygoer.
Photographing Identity – July 27 at 10 a.m.
If a camera has become one’s favorite artistic medium, Elisabet Ney Museum’s next class may cater to their interests. This Saturday, photographers can use the facility’s portrait booth to create one-of-a-kind collages. While the event does require creativity, money is not necessary for this free morning of photography.
The Cathedral July Open House – July 26 at 7 p.m.
If one seeks less to create art and more to spectate, consider The Cathedral’s open house this Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. The 21+ program highlights the artistry of Austin’s women and nonbinary people. Sip cocktails while perusing through pieces including Austin native Avery Price’s storied watercolor works and Jane Reischle’s distinctive embroidery pieces.
Silent Disco at Blanton – Aug. 10 at 3 p.m.
On Aug. 10, the Blanton Museum of Art hosts their monthly event, Second Saturday, where art appreciators socialize, dance and embark on guided tours as they soak in all the Blanton has to offer. Although they arrange this event each month, this August they add the twist of art-goers listening to the tunes of their choice through provided headphones.
