With the 2024 Summer Olympics kicking off tomorrow, many current Longhorns, Texas alumni and Texas coaches will be in Paris competing or coaching in their respective sports. Thirty athletes and seven coaches have ties to Texas, with 14 current student-athletes competing for Team USA, ranking fourth-most of any college behind Stanford, UCLA and USC. UT also ranks eighth in NCAA Division I schools for current and former athletes competing.
The Longhorns are competing in 12 different programs and will represent a total of 16 different countries. In the school’s history, Texas has had a total of 162 athletes participate in the Olympics and has accumulated 156 total medals with 89 of them gold.
Here are the Texas athletes to look out for when watching the 2024 Olympics.
Track and Field: Texas’ esteemed Track and Field program has accumulated 10 athletes who are in Paris ready to compete.
Ryan Crouser, a two-time Olympic medalist, will compete for Team USA in shot put.
Tara Davis-Woodhall, a second time Olympian, will compete for Team USA in long jump.
Mariam Abdul-Rashid will be competing in the 100m hurdles for Canada.
Rhasidat Adeleke will represent Ireland in the 400m and mixed 4x400m relay.
Julien Alfred is running both the 100 and 200m for Team Saint Lucia.
Emelia Chatfield will run the 100m hurdles for Haiti.
Leo Neugebauer will compete in the decathlon events for Team Germany.
The Texas trio consisting of Ackelia Smith competing in long and triple jump, Lanae-Tava Thomas running the 200m and bronze medalist Stacey-Ann Williams competing in the 400m and 4x400m relay will all be on Team Jamaica.
Swimming: 10 current and former Longhorns are set to compete for both men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
Carson Foster will participate in both the 200 and 400 individual medley for Team USA.
Rising sophomore Erin Gemmell will swim the 200m freestyle and 4×200 free relay for Team USA.
Rising senior Luke Hobson will swim the 200 free and 4×200 free relay for Team USA.
David Johnston, a rising senior, will compete for Team USA in the 1500 freestyle and open water 10k.
Rising sophomore Aaron Shackell is on Team USA and will compete in the 400m free.
Rising sophomore Angie Coe will swim the 200 IM for the country of Taiwan.
Caspar Corbeau will represent the Netherlands in the 100 and 200m breaststroke.
Rising senior Anna Elendt will swim in the 100m breaststroke and 4×100 medley relay for Team Germany.
Second-time Olympian Drew Kibler will compete for the United States in the 4×200 free relay.
Hubert Kos, a rising junior, will compete in three events for Hungary: 200m back, 100m fly and 100m back.
Second-time Olympian Alison Gibson will compete in the women’s 3-meter springboard dive for Team USA.
Other events:
Kevin Durant, Texas Ex and three-time gold medalist, will compete for Team USA in men’s basketball.
2020 gold medalist Chiaka Ogbogu will be on the women’s indoor volleyball team for Team USA.
Scottie Scheffler, Texas Ex and No. 1 ranked golfer in the world, will be competing for the U.S.
Both Kaitlin Knifton and Daisy Mazzio-Manson will be on the USA team competing in the women’s four for rowing.
Yvonne Anderson, in her second time at the Olympics, will compete in women’s basketball for Serbia.
2020 gold medalist Julia Grosso will be on Team Canada for women’s soccer.
Sara Kouskova is competing for the Czech Republic in women’s golf.
Lulu Sun will be on New Zealand’s team for women’s tennis doubles after her impressive run at Wimbledon, making it to the quarterfinals.
Coaching Staff:
As for Texas coaches, three current coaches will work for Team USA: swimming and diving coaches Carol Capitani and Matt Scoggin, and volleyball coach Erik Sullivan as a team ladder for men’s volleyball.
Newly hired from ASU and the former coach of Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps, Bob Bowman will be the national team coach for France.
Former Longhorn basketball player Royal Ivey will be the head coach for South Sudan men’s basketball.
Track and Field head coach Edrick Floréal will be on the coaching staff for the countries Ireland, Great Britain and Saint Lucia.
Jim Garnham, Texas’ Track and Field assistant coach, will be with Team Germany.
The opening ceremony kicks off tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. CT. With this much burnt orange in the 2024 Paris Olympics, there are sure to be some medals brought back to the Forty Acres.
