On a large campus with a variety of disciplines, worrying about acclimating in college intensifies first day jitters. To alleviate those jitters, The Daily Texan paired a few colleges with fun and useful student organizations.
Cockrell School of Engineering
UT SEC members participate in E-Week events, roundtable discussions with other organizations and casino nights. Six committees make up the council and are driven by “members at large,” with a number of leadership opportunities within the committees. For those eager to become a MAL, applications open on Monday.
Students Engineers Educating Kids
This organization offers members the unique chance to participate in a mentorship program in Austin middle schools. Past projects include building towers to introduce civil engineering to middle schoolers and extracting DNA from a strawberry for biomedical engineering. Applications for fall 2024 are open on their website.
College of Education
This organization connects future teachers with classroom teachers and provides professional development, such as interview preparation and service opportunities, shared through newsletters. Meetings are held every other Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Members of Reading Aces can volunteer to teach children how to read by encouraging the child to read to them or reading to the child. Held at various recreational centers, such as Mendez or Givens Rec Center, on Mondays through Thursdays, members determine their own levels of commitment. McCombs School of Business
UT’s Financial Literacy Club educates college students on personal finance topics such as budgeting and avoiding debt. Their guest speaker series and organization meetings prove practical and educational. Recruitment for fall 2024 begins soon, but in the meantime, one can fill out an interest form on their website.
BET encourages honesty in the business world by hosting talks with corporate speakers such as the former head lawyer of Wingstop, clean up socials and lecture-discussions about ethics. Follow the new member link on the organization’s Linktree and join the team at their first meeting on Sept. 5.
College of Natural Sciences
This organization shines light on professional opportunities available to CNS students in nontraditional career paths by hosting networking events such as its Advisors Fair. Be on the lookout for fall 2024 updates on their Instagram.
STEM Buddies allows members to spread the wonder of STEM to future generations, by providing elementary students with educational and interactive science lessons. The organization brings events such as archaeology day to nearby elementary schools. Fall 2024 applications are available on their Linktree.
