The Travis County Clerk’s office will take additional steps to reduce waiting times for the November election at the Texas Union polling location, the office said in an Aug. 26 memo.
The Union will have 20 voting devices for early voting and Election Day on Nov. 5. According to the County Clerk’s office memo, there has been a “misguided focus” on the number of devices allocated to the polling site slowing down voting lines.
The county will allocate extra election clerks and an additional E-PollBook to address these issues, assist voters who need to complete paperwork and provide information to voters. The County Clerk’s office memo states that it hopes these measures will streamline the voting process.
The LBJ School of Public Affairs will also serve as another on-campus voting location.
This comes after the University confirmed to the Texan late last month its main on-campus polling location will move from the Flawn Academic Center to the Texas Union due to planned construction. The Union is a three minute walk away from the FAC.
Multiple student civic engagement groups, including Texas Votes, Texas Rising and Turning Point USA’s UT chapter, voiced concerns that this change could impact student voter turnout, but they agreed there was no malicious intention behind the decision.
“On the UT campus, the most notable reason for lengthier wait times is the number of voters who are not registered at the correct address, do not have the proper form of identification, or were not registered at all,” the office said in a memo.
