Looking forward to a night game with little brother UTSA, the Longhorns are preparing to show out on Saturday. The Daily Texan sat down with Haley Aguayo, the sports editor of The Paisano, to discuss what the game will look like.
DT: The Roadrunners are at a balance of 1–1 going into the third week of the season, with their 49-10 loss against Texas State being an away game. How do you think the team is going to fare at their second away game in a row at DKR?
Haley Aguayo: We are struggling offensively right now. Our super senior quarterback, Frank Harris, graduated, and I think the new quarterbacks who were our two backups for the past few years are struggling to find a footing with the offense. Even Jeff Traylor, our head coach, is saying that his offense is very young and that he was hoping that they’d be able to support the defense more during our Texas State game, and that’s just not what happened. Sadly, I think they will struggle again this weekend against such a big team like UT. But we’re also excited because it’s a UT-UT game.
DT: UTSA is coming out of a 9–4 season after a season-ending game against Marshall. How is the team working to make this season even better?
Haley Aguayo: I think what Traylor’s trying to do is just trying to solidify who his big guys are going to be this year. We have a lot of returning people, but I think we lost 18 veterans last season, and they were all very much leaders within the team, as well as on the field. Like we were constantly seeing these guys and they all left to graduate or try for the NFL, which we did have a few guys do. So I think we’re just trying to get our new guys up to date. I can’t guarantee a winning season again, but I only hope for the best
DT: Who are the key players that Texas players and fans need to watch for?
Haley Aguayo: I think Devin McCuin is somebody that UT should look out for, as well as Ken Robinson. And Ken Robinson is one of our safeties, and I’ve just seen him over perform in the past two games, home and away. I mean, he got seven tackles in each game, so I think he’s definitely a force to be reckoned with right now. I’ve also seen Patrick Overmyer, who’s our tight end, put in the work against Texas State. We lost, but I saw some of these guys on the field just never give up. So I think those are some of the big guys. And I’m looking forward to seeing more from our two quarterbacks, see who’s going to play. And you know, you might see both quarterbacks this weekend, just like Texas State did, between Owen McCown and Eddie Lee Marburger.
DT: What do you think the matchup against former Roadrunner linebacker Trey Moore is going to look like?
Haley Aguayo: We both know that fans are more aggressive and defensive when we have players that have gone to other teams and we see them play against each other, I think what we’ll see is Trey Moore putting his best out on the field, but I’m excited that Trey Moore will get to be reunited with some of his former teammates. I’m sure there’s only good blood between the teams, even though there might be bad blood between UTSA fans and Trey Moore, but I’m just really excited to see how he performs.
DT: How do you think the game is going to go overall?
Haley Aguayo: I would really like them to repeat what they did at Texas State in the aspect that they just do not give up. I mean, it might have been low scoring for (UTSA), but these guys were running the whole time. I mean, it’s just athlete on athlete, and it’s really wonderful to see. So I think UT will win, but I’m hoping that our defense and our offense won’t give up as many points as we did to Texas State.
