Texas baseball alumni Roger Clemens and Murray Wall are the newest inductees to the College Baseball Hall of Fame. Texas will now have 14 former players in the Hall of Fame, surpassing Arizona State’s previous record of 13.
Founded in 2004, the College Baseball Foundation is a nonprofit with the goal to inspire the next generation by celebrating college baseball’s greatest players and coaches. Eligibility for the College Baseball Hall of Fame ballot requires players to be out of college for 15 years and have participated in one year of competition at either a two-year or four-year institution.
“From MLB All-Stars to College World Series legends, the 2024 College Baseball Hall of Fame class includes some of the most decorated players and coaches in the history of college baseball,” said Craig Ramsey, chair of the College Baseball Foundation Board of Trustees in Major League Baseball’s College Baseball Hall of Fame announcement article. “It is only fitting, as we prepare for another exciting season of college baseball, we take an opportunity to honor those who have contributed to the storied history of our extraordinary game.”
Roger “Rocket” Clemens pitched at the University of Texas for two years and led Texas to back-to-back Southwest Conference titles in 1982 and 1983. Clemens became a two-time All-American with the Longhorns, securing 25 wins, 20 career complete games, six shutouts and an astounding 241 strikeouts.
Clemens transitioned into his MLB career as a first-round draft pick to the Boston Red Sox, later moving to the Toronto Blue Jays, Houston Astros and New York Yankees. In his 24-season career Clemens became a 10-time MLB All-Star, record seven-time Cy Young Award winner, an American League MVP and a MLB All-Star Game MVP.
Among his previous honors, Clemens was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1994, the Texas Sports and Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 and became the first Longhorn to have his jersey retired in 1993.
The second Texas alumnus being inducted this year is Murray Wall. The two-time All-American played with the Longhorns from 1947 to 1950 and earned both ABCA All-American and All-Southwest Conference honors in 1949 and 1950 when he led Texas to back-to-back national championships.
Wall spent four years in the major leagues with the Boston Braves, Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators, tallying 13 wins and 82 strikeouts as a pro pitcher.
Wall was inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor in 1978 and will be celebrated posthumously at the MLB College Baseball Hall of Fame ceremony. Clemens will be in attendance for the 17th Night of Champions ceremony on Feb. 13, 2025 in Overland Park, Kansas.
