Last October, a UT alumna downloaded Geneva with the simple goal of bringing together a small group of crafters. What started as a modest gathering has since blossomed into a thriving community of over 20,000 followers, where Austin locals can now come together to socialize and create art in a vibrant, supportive environment.
Madison Purdy founded ATX Art Nights, a creative community that hosts weekly art events welcoming people of all skill levels. From cross-stitching to flower pressing, she embraces a wide range of crafts. Purdy said she’s always had a lifelong passion for art which she used as the inspiration behind the growing community.
“I’ve always loved art and creating art ever since I was a little kid,” Purdy said. “That’s all I would do and I found a love for teaching other people and letting other people experience art.”
Through her events, Purdy has helped many attendees discover their own creativity.
“Somebody told me the other day that they never painted in their life, and that was the first time they painted at one of my events,” Purdy said. “They (said they) felt like they found a new side of themselves.”
Purdy began by messaging local businesses to host her gatherings. As her following grew, coffee shops and breweries started reaching out to her. Jacquelyn Donahue, a regular attendee, said she admires Purdy’s collaboration with local businesses.
“Sometimes there’s monthly challenges, (and Purdy) will (give out) gift cards to places,” Donahue said. “She’s helping a lot of small businesses in Austin, whether it’s through hosting at places or where they get gift cards in exchange for people coming there.”
Depending on the night, attendees may need to purchase a ticket that covers all the supplies needed. Susan Bankston, another regular attendee, said she praises Purdy’s attention to detail and planning.
“(Madison’s) been able to find venues that will allow her to work in their space for little or no money so she can focus on providing a quality experience to people for a very nominal fee,” Bankston said. “A lot of those art supplies are not cheap — she does bring quality supplies to the events.”
Purdy said she believes it’s the supportive community that makes each night special.
“Every single time I go to an event, I get reminded of why I do all of it,” Purdy said. “Everybody’s always having a good time and loves it. They thank me for making it and they just appreciate it so much.”
