With 17 NCAA Division I sports programs, it can be hard for Longhorn supporters to keep up with Texas Athletics on a week-to-week basis.
To help Texas loyalists stay updated with their teams, The Daily Texan highlighted news, games and accolades achieved this week in this Longhorn weekly roundup.
Football
The newly promoted No. 1 Longhorns are set to bring back junior quarterback Quinn Ewers, who was sidelined the last two games with a non-contact oblique strain in week three.
Ewers and Texas will return from its bye week to play against Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Cotton Bowl.
Cross country
The women’s cross country squad finished sixth at the Sean Earl Lakefront Invitational last Friday, with six of the seven Longhorn runners setting new personal bests in the 6,000-meter race at the Sydney R. Marovitz Golf Course in Chicago.
Senior Eva Jess led the pack with a 12th-place finish, clocking a 19:59.99. The sub-20 minute performance was a 72-second improvement from her previous personal record she set in last season’s NCAA South Central Regionals meet.
The women’s team is currently ranked 29th in the country while the men sit at 27. Both teams will travel to Madison, Wisconsin, to compete in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet on Oct. 19.
Golf
The No. 11 men’s golf team finished second place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. The Longhorns carded a 6-under-par 834 (280-273-281), finishing four strokes behind No. 8 Oklahoma with a 10-under 830 (276-275-279).
Freshman Daniel Bennett made his Texas debut and led the team with a 5-under 205 (65-69-71) to finish third. Juniors Tommy Morrison (1-over 211) and Christiaan Maas (2-over 212) posted top 15 performances, finishing tied for 11th and 14th, respectively.
The men’s and women’s teams will each compete in the NB3 Collegiate Matchplay at the Twin Warriors Golf Club in Santa Ana Pueblo, New Mexico.
Soccer
Senior goalkeeper Mia Justus and freshman forward Amalia Villarreal were awarded Southeastern Conference weekly honors last week.
Justus was named the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week and Villarreal was tabbed as Co-Freshman of the Week after her performance in Texas’ match against Texas A&M, where the Longhorns won 2-0. The Longhorns lost 2-1 to Florida in their second matchup of the week, with Villarreal scoring the lone goal.
Texas will next face Oklahoma at 8 p.m. Thursday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Softball
Texas softball opened its fall slate with a doubleheader against St. Edwards and McLennan on Saturday, with the Longhorns outscoring the two teams 31-2 at Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Volleyball
No. 7 Texas swept South Carolina (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) last Wednesday at Gregory Gym. The Longhorns followed that performance with another sweep in a top-25 showdown against No. 18 Florida (25-23, 25-18, 25-14) Sunday at Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
