For Texas men’s golf juniors Tommy Morrison, Christiaan Maas and Luke Potter, the game of golf has not only bonded them as teammates but into college roommates.
Before arriving on the Forty Acres, Morrison and Maas were roommates while they were competing in the 2022 Sage Valley Junior Invitational.
Hailing from South Africa, Maas had never visited Texas before, and Morrison, a Texas local, said he and his future teammate hit it off during the tournament.
“I knew he was committed to Texas and he had never been to the state, so I kind of just tried to take him under my wing,” Morrison said.
Since coming to Texas as a part of the 2022 recruiting class, Maas and Morrison have been inseparable. The pair decided to continue their living arrangement when they came to Austin.
The newest addition to the apartment is fellow junior Luke Potter. Morrison became friends with Potter when the pair were competing against each other while on the junior golf circuit. During a difficult sophomore year at Arizona State, Morrison sold Potter on how great the Texas golf program is.
Wanting to see Texas football play, Potter made the trek to Austin to see his old friend. By the end of the spring, he decided to transfer to Texas after speaking to head coach John Fields and assistant coach Erik Henson.
“Never in junior golf did I think I was going to play on a college golf team with Luke Potter,” Morrison said. “I couldn’t be happier that he’s here.”
With all three landing in the Top 50 in the recent World Amateur Golf Rankings, competitiveness is naturally high even in casual settings like a game of Wii Golf in the apartment.
“We get pretty fired up,” Morrison said. “Christian’s definitely the best; he’s probably a plus eight handicap. It’s always us battling for second.”
Wii remote-throwing aside, the three work and play hard together — at school, on the course and at home.
