As the college football season continues to unfold, the SEC finds itself with multiple schools in top-ranked spots. Six of the eight teams sit at a 6–1 record and this weekend will be a chance for some to set themselves apart from the rest.
No. 2 Georgia
Georgia took down Texas 30-15 in a tumultuous game last Saturday and rose to the second spot in the AP Top 25. The Bulldogs did not go into Austin as the favorite, and head coach Kirby Smart told ESPN that he and his team wanted to prove everyone wrong. Georgia moves to a 6–1 record and gets to soak in their win during a bye week before facing Florida on Nov. 2.
No. 5 Texas
Texas fell four places after digging into a 23-0 hole in the first half against Georgia and failing to rally as the game went on. The game featured interceptions on both sides, a Texas quarterback switch and a controversial call to which Texas fans responded by throwing bottles on the field. This critical SEC matchup marked the start of a more challenging part of the Longhorns’ schedule as they travel to Nashville this weekend to play No. 25 Vanderbilt.
No. 7 Tennessee
The Tennessee versus Alabama game that lifted the Vols four spots and sank the Crimson Tide eight pulled in 14.7 million viewers last Saturday afternoon. Tennessee is now 6–1, joining the long list of SEC schools with that same record. The Vols also have a week to rest until they take on their next opponent.
No. 8 LSU
LSU is the last SEC team to make it to the top ten in the AP Poll and did so after a 34-10 win over Arkansas last weekend. The Tigers held the Razorbacks to just one touchdown and a field goal, cruising to a victory that helped them maintain the No. 8 ranking. The 6–1 team is set to play Texas A&M in College Station this Saturday at 6:30 PM.
No. 14 Texas A&M
The Aggies triumphed over Mississippi State last Saturday night and held their position at No. 14. Texas A&M boasts another 6–1 record, their one loss coming from an upset against Notre Dame early in the season but they haven’t lost a game since.
No. 15 Alabama
Alabama couldn’t pull off a win against Tennessee this past Saturday and finds itself eight spots lower than last week. A poor performance from redshirt junior quarterback Jalen Milroe led to a 24-17 loss and some criticism from the media. The 5–2 Crimson Tide will face No. 21 Mizzou at home on Saturday at 2:30 PM.
