Sen. Ted Cruz won his reelection bid against Democratic challenger Rep. Colin Allred, election results platform Decision Desk announced Tuesday at about 9:30 p.m.
Cruz held a 53.1% to 44.5% lead over Allred, according to the Associated Press, which is more than Cruz’s lead in 2018 against Beto O’Rourke, his last opponent.
Cruz focused his campaign on immigration, the economy and anti-transgender policies in the country. Cruz is a long-time ally of 47th President-elect Donald Trump and has promised to work with him to “secure” the U.S.-Mexico border.
During his October debate with Allred, Cruz focused on undocumented immigrants in the U.S., saying Allred has historically opposed a border wall in South Texas.
Cruz has been criticized in the past by his constituents for challenging the 2020 election results after Jan. 6 and leaving the U.S. during Winter Storm Uri in 2021, which left much of the state without power.
As the Republican candidate, Cruz helped secure a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate, opening a pathway for the incoming Republican Party to have a trifecta over the federal government as current election results point to a possible majority in the U.S. House of Representatives as well. At the time of publication, 15 U.S. House seats are yet to be determined.
Cruz will enter his third term as a U.S. senator for Texas in January 2025.
