Amidst a season of midterms and deadlines, students find comfort in the sounds of live music and sweet treats found at Campus Events + Entertainment’s Cozy Concert.
On Wednesday, four student artists took the stage at Cactus Cafe as part of the Cozy Concert. Hot chocolate flowed as Anna Buendia, Camille Stites, Lizzie Budin and Martin Leon played soothing originals and covers for a packed house.
“We did it last year for the first time and decided to bring it back because it was such a good success,” E+E member Peyton Wade said. “It’s a really sweet event … and we love doing things at this venue. It’s very unique and historic to UT.”
Wade, a psychology sophomore, said artists responded to an interest form on the E+E Instagram and members voted on who they wanted to see in the lineup. Headliner Martin Leon is no stranger to live performances, performing at venues and festivals since the age of twelve. The speech, language and hearing sciences sophomore said he likes getting a feel for the audience before he plays.
“I love meeting with people before the show,” Leon said. “They could be doing anything else with their time … but they have insisted on … spending their time here with you. … It’s special.”
Last year, Leon signed with UTalent Records, UT’s student-run record label. Chosen out of 100 applicants, his time with UTalent records facilitated the release of his single “FEEL THE SAME” in February.
Leon dazzled the audience with a set list he said is meant to take the audience on a rollercoaster ride. In keeping with the cozy theme of the event, Leon said he and his band focused on creating a relaxing set.
“Sip your hot chocolate, have your cookie (and) enjoy that you’re there on a Wednesday listening to some really chill music,” Leon said. “There’s guitar solos, drum grooves … you can just close your eyes and just enjoy the moment.”
Psychology junior Lizzie Budin, who took the stage before Leon, said Wednesday marked her second time performing at Cactus Cafe. After playing at an open mic event, Budin returned for her cozy set performing an original she is currently recording at the studio.
Budin’s performance blended her sweet vocals with an acoustic guitar, creating a warm track perfect for the cozy vibes of the show.
Hitting capacity just ten minutes after the start of the event, the Cozy Concert proved a success. Public health freshman Mariana Ramos said she stopped by to satisfy her sweet tooth and stayed for the charming sounds.
“It’s really chill,” Ramos said. “I think it’s really good (for) discovering new artists as well (as) supporting them.”
