Just when it seems an SEC team has gotten comfortable in its spot in the polls, another team comes in to mess everything up.
With several unexpected wins in week 11, with the most notable being Ole Miss dominating against Georgia in Oxford, the week 12 SEC power rankings look decidedly different.
Texas (8–1)
This week saw Texas return to No. 3 in the AP Poll and to No. 3 in the SEC. In a 49-17 blowout win against Florida at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the Longhorns seem to have regained some confidence during their bye week.
Texas heads to Arkansas this week before hosting Kentucky in the last home game of the regular season.
Tennessee (8–1)
As the only other 8–1 team in the SEC, No. 6 Tennessee sits in the first spot. However, in the win against Mississippi State last week, quarterback Nico Iamaleava sustained an injury that brings up questions about how well the Vols will perform in week 12.
They will need to be in their best form. All eyes will be on Tennessee this weekend as the team kicks off against No. 11 Georgia this weekend, with a playoff spot on the line for Georgia.
Alabama (7–2)
No. 9 Alabama had an impressive performance last week against No. 21 LSU, with quarterback Jalen Milroe rushing for four touchdowns and 185 yards. Alabama’s win knocked LSU down seven spots in the AP polls, destroying its chances of making the 12-team playoff.
The rest of the Tide’s regular season should help the team build confidence in the upcoming weeks, with games against Mercer followed by Oklahoma and Auburn.
Ole Miss (8–2)
The Rebels are responsible for the largest upset this week after their 28-10 win against the No. 2 Bulldogs. Putting Georgia in a tough spot where they might not make the 12-team playoff came at a hefty price for the Ole Miss athletic department.
Ole Miss was fined $350,000 by the SEC after fans rushed onto the field with 16 seconds left in the game. On top of the fine, they also have to pay to fix their field, as the goalpost was carried out of the stadium after the game.
Ole Miss is in a good spot to make the playoffs as long as it stays consistent, especially on defense. The potential for an upset is always there in the SEC, but Florida and Mississippi State shouldn’t be huge problems for Ole Miss.
Georgia (7–2)
After its loss to Ole Miss, Georgia fell nine spots in the AP poll, now sitting at No. 11.
The Bulldogs now find themselves in a bad situation. If Georgia wants to make the playoffs, the team needs to pick up their game to win against Tennessee this Saturday in Athens. College GameDay will be there this week to see if Georgia can pull through.
