=The No. 1 Texas Longhorns men’s swimming and dive stayed hot with some big performances at this week’s Texas Invitational. This was a highly competitive three-day meet held in Austin at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. No. 8 Stanford, No. 14 Wisconsin, No. 20 Southern California, Brigham Young, Pittsburgh and California Poly all traveled to Austin to participate in the meet.
The Longhorns started Wednesday strong as freshman Garrett Gould, sophomore Camden Taylor, junior Aleksej Filipovic and freshman Kyle Peck won the 200m freestyle relay with a time of 1:16.73.
In the 500m free, former Longhorn Carson Foster set a school and American record with a time of 4:05.81. Minutes later, sophomore Rex Maurer proceeded to break the record again with a time of 4:04.45.
Sophomore Will Modglin, who had an impressive meet, took the 200m IM with a time of 1:40.97. Junior Hubert Kós finished second while fifth-year Ben Sampson was right behind him in third with times of 1:41.17 and 1:42.43, respectively.
Modglin continued his success with another win in the 400m medley relay alongside sophomore Nate Germonprez, Kós and senior captain Luke Hobson. They raced to an excellent time of 3:02.18 to close out Wednesday night.
Another school record was broken on Thursday in the 100m breast prelims. Germonprez surpassed former Longhorn Caspar Corbeau with a time of 50.39 seconds.
Records continued to be broken as Modglin broke his own Texas record in the 100m back prelims with a time of 43.98 seconds.
In the 400m IM, Maurer won with the second-fastest time in program history. He finished with a time of 3:34.19 and was followed by senior David Johnston, freshman Cooper Lucas and Sampson who swept second through fourth respectively.
The Longhorns continued to dominate as they swept the top six spots of the 100m butterfly. Peck won with a time of 45.77 and was followed by Kós, sophomore Logan Walker, Filipovic, junior Ryan Branon and junior Holden Smith.
Taylor won the 200m free with a time of 1:32.02. Graduate student Coby Carrozza finished second with a time of 1:32.27, while Hobson finished fourth with a time of 1:32.99.
In the 100m breast, Germonprez stayed as dominant as he was in the prelims and won with a time of 50.87. Sophomore Will Scholtz finished second with a time of 51.03.
Modglin lowered the record he set in the 100m back prelims with 43.91 seconds in the finals to get the win.
Texas finished Thursday night with a commanding win in the 800m free relay as Maurer, Carrozza, Taylor, and Hobson sped to a time of 6:09.30.
Maurer started Wednesday strong with a win in the 1650m free. He raced to the second-fastest time in program history at 14:30.47. Johnston finished second with a time of 14:35.42.
Modglin continued his stellar meet by winning the 200m back with a time of 1:37.84. Sampson finished third with a time of 1:42.01.
Texas took the 100m free as Taylor grabbed the win with a time of 42.35.
Scholtz raced to the win in the 200m breast with a time of 1:51.66 and was followed by sophomore Brayden Taivassalo who finished second with a time of 1:52.20.
In the 200m fly, Walker raced to a win with a time of 1:41.01. Branon finished second with a time of 1:41.76 while Carrozza finished fourth with a time of 1:42.10.
In a truly electric race, Modglin, junior Kobe Ndebele, Peck and Carrozza of Texas B won a tight 400m freestyle relay with a time of 2:49.67.
The Longhorns hold a terrific start to the season and currently sit at 2-0 while rising to the number one spot in the rankings. Texas will head to Indianapolis up next to compete in the USA Diving Winter Nationals from Dec. 7- 15. They will face No. 7 Georgia in Austin Dec. 18 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
