The first “Call of Duty” game under the control of Microsoft, “Black Ops 6,” released Oct. 25. “Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” takes place during the Gulf War in 1991 and contains three modes: multiplayer, zombies and the campaign.
Multiplayer feels the best it has in years! The gunplay is smooth, the map designs are easy to navigate yet unique and the unlockables are all a blast to build up toward. The old style of “prestiging” (resetting players to level one once they hit level 55) is back, rather than just endlessly increasing your level into the hundreds each season like previous games, alongside new emblems to unlock for each prestige. The game modes available are also all unique, giving players more ways to play than ever before with classic 6v6 game modes or smaller maps and play modes like gunfight that place players in a 2v2 matchup.
”Black Ops 6” introduces omni-movement, allowing players to run, dive and shoot in any direction they want versus old “Call of Duty” games that forced players to move in the direction they were looking. All of this combines to make a “Call of Duty” game that finally fulfills all the desires of the massive fanbase.
The other two core modes within “Black Ops 6” are the zombies mode and the campaign. The last couple of franchise entries have had awful campaigns with little to no story and a way too repetitive mission cycle, but “Black Ops 6” crafts a narratively strong story mode that continues the adventures of previous franchise-staple characters while introducing new ones.
Another nice twist is, rather than working with a governmental group, this story follows players as they go rogue from the CIA. Zombies also come as a pleasant surprise as it finally feels like the classic round-based zombies fans know and love rather than the abomination that was Modern Warfare III’s sad excuse for a zombie mode. Gobblegums also make their return, which allow players temporary boosts and power ups as they go through rounds of zombies.
“Call of Duty: Black Ops 6” fixes a lot of the issues fans had with previous “Call of Duty” games and continues the mentality that any “Black Ops” game under Treyarch Corporation’s control will be a good one. Despite how good “Call of Duty” feels this year, fans should still understand that a yearly cycle for this franchise only harms it and games as good as “Black Ops 6” will only happen once in a blue moon if Activision continues operating the way it does. Regardless, it truly is refreshing to have a “Call of Duty” game that doesn’t feel like a chore to come back to all year.
