No. 11 Texas women’s tennis triumphed over No. 53 TCU on Feb. 20 in Fort Worth, with a decisive 6–1 win.
With the Longhorns’ move to the SEC this year, they faced off against former Big 12 rivals outside of conference play. Texas sought redemption following a loss to Texas A&M in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships quickly followed by another loss to Michigan in a consolation match.
The Longhorns showed determination as they dominated in doubles, with redshirt freshman Charlotte Kempenaers-Pocz making her duals debut alongside senior Sabina Zeynalova with a 6–3 win. Freshmen duo Salma Drugdova and Carmen Herea won their doubles match 6–4 quickly after, securing Texas the doubles point in just 40 minutes.
Kempenaers-Pocz was the first to finish her matches in both doubles and singles. She dominated in her singles match against TCU senior Tomi Main, where she led her first set to three and closed the deal with another three after Main squeezed in a point between. Her second set went similarly, leading 4–0 and increasing the Longhorns’ lead to 2–0.
TCU collected its sole win when No. 124 freshman Eszter Meri fell to her sophomore opponent Raquel Caballero. The Longhorns went on to secure singles points in two following matches thanks to Zeynalova and freshman Ashton Bowers. Herea fought diligently to set three in a super tiebreaker against TCU junior Yu-Chin Tsai where her 1–0 (5) win awarded Texas its fifth point of the evening.
With only five courts available, Drugdova became the only Longhorn on the courts as her match began after Texas’s fourth point. Drugdova showed out in her first set leading 5–0 and proceeded to fight for the team’s sixth and final point, finishing her match 6–1, 6–4.
The Longhorns face a week of rivalry matchups as they step into conference play. Texas faced Texas A&M in a rematch Sunday then look to play Oklahoma on Friday, both at home.
