In its 100th straight week in the top 15, No. 4 Texas men’s tennis stayed hot in its tenth straight ranked matchup, taking down No. 32 Auburn 4-1.
It has been a warm welcome to the Southeastern Conference for the Texas Longhorns. Despite facing a ranked team in every matchup, the Longhorns improved to 5–0 in SEC play. This extends their out-right lead in the conference, widening the gap between them and second place No. 43 South Carolina.
After losing to No. 15 Texas A&M in College Station on Thursday, Auburn was looking to get back in the win column, but this was not the case. With beloved actor and Texas alumnus Matthew McConaughey in attendance, the Longhorns got off to a hot start.
Fresh off an upset win over No. 45 senior JC Roddick on Thursday, Tigers’ unranked freshman Alex Frusina was unable to continue his momentum when he and freshman doubles partner freshman Joey Phillips were overpowered by Longhorns junior Sebastian Gorzny and junior Jonah Braswell 6-2.
Almost immediately after Gorzny and Braswell took care of business, senior Pierre-Yves Bailly and freshman Sebastian Eriksson gave Texas a 1-0 lead after taking down junior Thomas Kennedy and the reigning SEC Athlete of the Week redshirt sophomore Nicholas Heng 6-2.
Texas sophomore Lucas Brown got the ball rolling in the singles competition with a victory over Heng, winning both sets 6-2. This extended the Longhorn lead to 2-0. Eriksson continued the Texas winning streak with a 6-2, 7-5 win over freshman Hamza Nasridinov. Now with the score sitting at 3-0, Texas was only one point away from another SEC win.
Auburn received their first point of the afternoon after Frusina upset No. 13 Gorzny 6-4, 7-5, putting the score at 3-1. Frusina now has back-to-back ranked singles wins. Gorzny’s loss however didn’t alter the Longhorn’s attitude.
“The team culture is excellent,” redshirt freshman Timo Legout said. “That’s something we take a lot of pride in and Bruce (Berque) is really good at recruiting and making sure we keep that culture really strong. It’s (tennis) individual but it’s a team match in college so we try to keep the (culture) safe.”
A big forehand from Braswell put the exclamation point on a successful Saturday afternoon for the Longhorns, taking down Phillips 6-4, 6-2 and clinching the win over Auburn.
Texas now improves to 14–2, 11–0 at home, as it prepares for No. 2 TCU in Fort Worth on Tuesday. TCU will hope to avenge its previous loss to Texas when the Longhorns took down the then-No. 1 ranked team 4-1 on Feb. 7.
