No. 4 Texas men’s tennis picked up its ninth conference win in its penultimate home game of the season against No. 35 Kentucky, remaining undefeated in conference play.
No. 19 junior Sebastian Gorzny, along with No. 53 junior Jonah Braswell, spearheaded the victory, winning by significant margins in doubles and singles play.
In doubles play, Gorzny and Braswell would be the first pair off the court, easily winning their set 6-1 against juniors Charlelie Cosnet and Martin Breysach. Gorzny hit pinpoint shots down the sideline and added to his highlight reel with a perfectly executed tweener from the baseline. Braswell brought an intense energy to the set, howling at the stands after every point won, keeping him and the crowd in the match.
After No. 8 redshirt freshman Timo Legout and sophomore Lucas Brown fell 6-3 to No. 21 sophomore Eli Stephenson and sophomore Jack Loutit, senior Pierre-Yves Bailly and freshman Sebastian Eriksson would need to step up in the clutch against freshman Antoine Ghibaudo and junior Jaden Weekes.
Eriksson delivered in the final set, sending a screaming serve that was returned straight into the net by Weekes. They would win 6-3, taking home the doubles point for the Longhorns.
In singles play, Gorzny was the first off the court. Winning both his sets, 6-2, 6-1, he made scoring look effortless. By maintaining his position in the middle of the court, Gorzny sent Loutit back-and-forth along the baseline, tiring him out, and ripping winners every opportunity he got.
Similar to his doubles partner, Braswell would showcase an impressive outing, winning both his sets, 6-3, 6-1. The redhead never lost a step even when up big. After every winning point, he’d erupt with a raw, triumphant scream to the crowd, to which the packed-out stands would respond with cheers and claps, helping keep the senior’s fire.
Up 3-0 in the game, Texas would need just one more win to cement the victory against Kentucky.
With every game on the court remaining up in the air, the win would come down to the young gun, Eriksson, who already won his first set 6-3. But Stephenson would make the Swede work for it.
In a point that saw the two trade shots, Eriksson would work the court, sending Stephenson from sideline to sideline. Stephenson simply couldn’t keep up, finally sending a ball out, sealing the set for Eriksson and the sweep for Texas.
Texas now looks to prepare for a quick turnaround with its next match scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. against No. 26 South Carolina.
This will be the Longhorns’ last home game of the season, marking senior night and a sendoff for lone senior Bailly.
