This weekend celebrates UT’s official parents weekend, during which the University holds events for students’ families and friends. The college experience extends far beyond campus and into the city many call home. The Daily Texan compiled a list including the best things to show parents this weekend around town.
Brunch at Arturo’s Underground Cafe
While Kerbey Lane Cafe provides a staple for UT students, just down the road, Arturo’s Underground Cafe serves brunch Saturday and Sunday. The casual eclectic vibe from a dark room and interesting artwork captures Austin’s unique qualities. Breakfast tacos and original benedict recipes pair well with their locally roasted coffee, serving as a great way to start one’s day.
Hike Mount Bonnell
Only 15 minutes from UT, Mount Bonnell, open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., provides a beautiful view of Austin. One of the highest points within Austin city limits, Mount Bonnell overlooks Lake Austin, downtown and the surrounding hills. The 102-stair climb ends on a deck and pavilion to relax and take in the views.
Butler Pitch & Putt
For any golf lovers, Butler Pitch & Putt, open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., brings a 9-hole, par 3 course to downtown Austin. The real grass greens make it a fun and easy-to-play course for all skill levels. They do not take reservations for tee times, but the course moves quickly as the holes are short.
Walk through the Wildflower Center
Located 30 minutes south of Austin, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., is the official Botanic Garden and Arboretum of Texas. It spans 284 acres and hosts thousands of stunning flowers and long trails. Bluebonnets currently line pathways throughout the cultivated and large-scale research land plots.
Dine at Michelin Rated BBQ
In November 2024, the Michelin guide awarded 15 single stars to restaurants in four major cities throughout Texas. The list included three Austin BBQ joints: LeRoy and Lewis, la Barbecue and InterStellar. These places often have a line during opening, and a one to two hour wait time can be expected later in the day. It is recommended to arrive early for the opportunity to order from the whole menu.
Attend a show for Austin Comedy Festival
Moontower will bring a 10-day comedy festival to Austin beginning April 9. Clubs, arenas and bars will host famous comedians for a hilarious show-filled weekend. Over 150 of the world’s top and emerging comedians will perform throughout the city, filling the night with laughter. The schedule and tickets can be found on their website.
