With finals right around the corner and summer break in sight, it’s time to refresh those worn-out study playlists. The Daily Texan compiled a list of songs from three Austin artists to build the ultimate summer soundtrack. From rhythmic rock to soulful blues, this playlist features local talent across genres, rooted in the Live Music Capital of the World.

“Colors” – Black Pumas 

Starting strong with “Colors” by the American psychedelic soul band Black Pumas, this beautiful, soulful song blends retro R&B, psychedelic rock and modern funk to create a feel-good tune. The cheerful lyrics, “It’s a good day to be. A good day for me. A good day to see my favorite colors,”  celebrate individuality. The rhythmic beat and glimmery harmonies in the chorus are perfect to dance the night away. 

“Fire” – Black Pumas 

Another hit from Black Pumas, this is the perfect song to share with a summertime fling. Tapping into the vulnerability of falling in love, it radiates the excitement of budding romance. The compelling chorus combines soul, blues and rock to create a rich sound.

“Bright Lights” – Gary Clark Jr. 

Continuing with smooth rhythm, our third selection comes from Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist from Austin, Gary Clark Jr. “Bright Lights” is an absolute summer anthem, perfect for nights spent chasing freedom under the city lights. Clark’s smooth vocals mesh well with catchy guitar riffs, capturing the essence of being alive and free. Listeners will feel ready to take on whatever the night, or summer, brings.

“When My Train Pulls In” – Gary Clark Jr. 

Another by Clark, this song uses slow blues and powerful guitar riffs to create an intense, soulful track perfect for warm, introspective summer walks. The ballad embraces change, resonating with listeners who anticipate their changes as the school year draws to a close. 

“One Step Forward” – Jackie Venson 

Austin native Jackie Venson brings a fresh blend of R&B and pop rock with her single “One Step Forward.” This song contains a breezy, upbeat vibe, ideal for cruising through the Hill Country on a sunny day. With a smooth piano, finger snapping beats and a hint of blues, it’s a feel-good song rooted in Venson’s signature style. 

“Always Free” – Jackie Venson

This single’s lyrics tell a story, creating an energetic and thoughtful track. The chorus adds a bold rock punch without drifting too far from its blues foundation. It’s another track perfect for open roads, windows down and day-tripping under summer skies.
