No. 10 Texas women’s tennis returned to the Texas Tennis Center on Sunday for its second home match of the season, in which the team swept the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley 7-0.
Texas sophomore Carmen Herea departed from her normal partnership with freshman Elizabeth Ionescu to team up with freshman Anastasia Abbagnato. The duo drew first blood in doubles play with a 6-0 sweep over UTRGV senior Barbara Martinez and junior Rhea Makesar.
Ionescu paired with sophomore Eszter Meri to take down UTRGV sophomore Luna Buijtenhuijs and senior Valentina Urraco 6-2, securing the doubles point. Play continued as Texas freshman Mathilde Ngijol-Carré and sophomore Salma Drugdova bested UTRGV junior Hitakamya Narwal and sophomore Mariia Bakhtina 6-4 to complete the sweep and go up 1-0 as a team in the match.
The Longhorns would build on their lead in singles play, with Ionescu getting off the court first after a 6-3, 6-0 win over Buijtenhuijs. Ngijol-Carré wasn’t far behind with an 8-0 run to open the match, sweeping the first set and only giving up one point in the second to complete a commanding 6-0, 6-1 routing of Makesar and giving Texas a 3-0 lead.
Meri would provide the deciding point, sweeping the first set and taking a 5-1 lead in the second to secure a 6-0, 6-2 win over Narwal. As the match continued, so did Texas’ domination, as Texas freshman Kate Mansfield was next off the court with a 6-0, 7-5 win over Bakhtina, followed by Drugdova’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Urraco.
Last off the court was the No. 2 singles player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, Herea. Although Herea dropped her first set against Martinez, she made up for it by sweeping the following two sets to win the match, 6-7(3), 6-0, 6-0, to finish the overall match and cap off an authoritative home win for the Longhorns.
Across all singles matches, Texas posted six combined set sweeps and won four sets by three or more points, marking their best performance of the season so far. The Longhorns will be back in action on Monday, Feb. 16, as they travel to Las Vegas to compete in the United States Tennis Association W35 tournament.
