Miner redshirt sophomore quarterback Malachi Nelson will be making an appearance on the field today, continuing his first season as UTEP’s starting quarterback. At one point, Nelson was ESPN’s No. 1 quarterback in the 2023 class — ahead of Texas redshirt sophomore quarterback Arch Manning — and is looking for redemption in an upset. Miner head coach Scotty Walden is in the same boat, looking to improve his 1-1 record and overturn the No. 7 team in the country on its home turf this afternoon.
For Texas, this will be another test to the offensive rhythm that has struggled to kick into gear, as well as an experiment on the defense’s ability to dominate the ball against an underdog before conference play begins. Sarkisian will be seeking a reduction in penalties and a dynamic performance from the run game in the second of this three-game stint at DKR.
Junior running back Quintrevion Wisner, sophomore wide receiver Emmett Mosely V and junior wide receiver Deandre Moore Jr. will be missing today, with the Longhorns hoping to sustain a healthy team throughout its non-conference series. Moore received a concussion in last week’s game against San Jose State, while Wisner is nursing a leg injury and Mosley in recovery from an ongoing lower-body injury.
Kickoff begins at 3:15 p.m. CT. Follow along this thread for live updates from the Texan.
