Freshmen Ben Johnson, Jeremy Montalbano power Texas past UCSB as Horns sweep Gauchos, win fourth straight

A strong performance Texas offense carried the Longhorns to a 11-6 win against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon to sweep the Gauchos in this weekend’s three-game series. The Longhorns produced 10 hits and 11 runs, a season high, in the win as freshman Jeremy Montalbano sent a three-run home run out of the park for his first collegiate hit and another freshman, outfielder Ben Johnson, went 4-for-4 with two doubles and a first-inning solo homer.

“Offensively, it was our best game of the year,” said Texas head coach Augie Garrido. “This was the most consistent 27 innings of the season where we competed from inning to inning, pitch to pitch.”

Over the weekend, the Longhorns outscored the Gauchos 19-9 and outhit them 30-18. Junior Erich Weiss notched his 13th career triple Sunday, putting him in ninth on the all-time Texas list, while going 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI.

Junior Nathan Thornhill started on the mound for the Longhorns. After going four innings while giving up five hits and three runs, was relieved. Sophomore Cameron Cox, who came in during the fifth inning, earned his first win on the mound after pitching 1 2/3 innings while only surrendering two hits and two runs.

The Longhorns will host Oral Roberts on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Golden Eagles are 5-9 on the season and are coming off a 2-1 series victory against Louisiana Tech on the road.
