Parking along the 2600 block of Whitis Avenue became part of the city of Austin’s jurisdiction on Wednesday.
“Once the city of Austin determined this area belonged to the [city], the city assumed responsibility for the right-of-way — including street parking — along this street,” said Marissa Monroy, public information specialist for the city's transportation department.
Monroy said the city would work to transfer the parking meters along the street.
The area previously offered UT permit parking, meter parking and ZipCar parking during the spring 2014 semester. Before then, parking was free in the area.
The city meters will be enforced Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. The University said it will work with the city to make sure it meets the parking needs of people during the on-campus dormitories move-in period. Early move-in begins Aug. 18, and regular move-in begins Aug. 22.
