Free Austin events to attend this week

Editor’s Note: In this recurring column, staff writer Katie Walsh recommends free events in Austin for the week.

Motown Mondays 

  • Where: The Highball, 1120 S. Lamar Blvd.
  • Time: 8 p.m.

Transport yourself back to the late ’60s with a night of Motown music courtesy of two 10-piece R&B bands, The Matchmaker Band and The Nightowls, playing at 9 p.m. and 11:15 p.m. respectively. As you wait for the band to take the stage, grab one of The Highball’s specialty cocktails from the bar or come an hour early for free West Coast Swing dance lessons starting at 8 p.m.

Tuesday, Nov. 24

Tuezgayz

  • Where: Barbarella, 615 Red River St.
  • Time: 10 p.m. 

Voted the best club night in Austin by the Austin Chronicle, Tuezgayz is a 21+ night of indie/electronic music at Barbarella with a happy hour until 11 p.m. Doors open at 10 p.m. and there is no cover before midnight.

Spideroke – The Best Karaoke Night Ever

  • Where: Spider House, 2908 Fruth St.
  • Time: 9:30 p.m.

Every second and fourth Wednesday of the month, Spider House hosts a free night of karaoke, comedy and drink specials. In addition to normal karaoke, several karaoke challenges will be available for participants to join, including games called Genre Confused, which challenges singers to sing a song in the opposite genre, for example a death metal version of “Total Eclipse of the Heart” or Mad Props, a game that challenges singers to sing songs inspired by a predetermined prop.

Turkey Night Potluck Party

  • Where: The Brixton, 1412 E Sixth St.
  • Time: 8 p.m.

If you find yourself longing for a home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner, head to neighborhood bar The Brixton  for a potluck dinner. Bring your favorite Thanksgiving dish to share and The Brixton will provide drink specials.

Lucky Lounge Presents Alice & The Lil’ Darlings, Quentin Moore & Run Amok 

  • Where: Lucky Lounge, 209A W Fifth St. 
  • Time: 7 p.m.

Austin-based hard rock band Run Amok will kick off the night of free music presented by Lucky Lounge at 7 p.m. Quentin Moore, a soul musician from Dallas, will take the stage at 9:30 p.m. and Alice & The Lil’ Darlings plays at 11 p.m.

Chortle Portal Comedy Show

  • Where: Taos Co-op, 2612 Guadalupe St.
  • Time: 7 p.m.–8:30 p.m. 

UT students and local comics Andrew Clarkston and Andrew Dismukes host Chortle Portal, a weekly comedy show with sets from four to five local comedians on Saturdays at 7 p.m. This week, music will be provided by Austin-based pop music project, Indoor Creature. Arrive early to ensure a seat in the Taos Co-op basement.

Sunday, Nov. 29

Second Annual Horror For The Holidays Art & Gift Bazaar

  • Where: Spider House, 2908 Fruth St.
  • Time: 12 p.m.–7 p.m. bazaar, 8 p.m. screening

Touted as the “most horrific shopping day in town,” the Horror For The Holidays Art & Gift Bazaar is a market for vendors that sell creepy holiday trinkets. The event, which also includes a photo booth with Evil Santa and Krampus, will run from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday in the Spider House Ballroom and chapel. Following the bazaar, attendees are invited to enjoy free pizza, prizes and a screening of the movie “Elves.”
