Final update (3:25 p.m.): Texas didn’t take much time to score coming out of the locker room, finding the end zone on a 4-yard touchdown run from quarterback Tyrone Swoopes. The Longhorns went 75 yards on 11 plays, gaining an eight point lead with just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter.

The Red Raiders quickly answered the Longhorn touchdown upon receiving the ball, driving 75 yards for a score. The key play on the touchdown drive was a fake punt which went for 25 yards, setting up a touchdown from Mahomes to wide receiver Cameron Batson.

But Texas extended its lead on its next possession, scoring on a 38-yard dash to the end zone from Foreman. The junior’s run continued his brilliant day in Lubbock, giving him 230 yards on just 23 carries.

The two teams took a quick respite from the scoring barrage to trade punts late in the third quarter, entering the final quarter with the Longhorns up 38-30.

Texas would extend its lead on the first play of the final frame, however, as Foreman scampered 74 yards to the end zone. His run gave him 311 yards on the day on just 26 carries, 39 yards short of Ricky Williams’ single-game school record.

The Longhorns looked to be pulling away up 15 points and driving in Red-Raider territory. But freshman running back Kyle Porter gave Tech life, fumbling the ball for a turnover. The Red Raiders capitalized on the mistake, driving  37 yards for a touchdown. With less than 11 minutes to play, Texas led 45-37.

Texas ceded possession to the Red Raiders with over seven minutes left, but Tech could not find the end zone. Patrick Mahomes was stopped short on a quarterback sneak, giving Texas the ball up eight with four minutes to play.

The Red Raiders came within striking distance of the end zone with under a minute to play, making it inside the Texas 20-yard line. But Kris Boyd picked off Mahomes in the end zone with nine seconds to go to seal a 45-37 victory. The win improved Texas’ record to 5–4, 3–3 Big 12.

Halftime update (1:10 p.m.): Texas Tech got the scoring started on the game’s opening possession, scoring within the contest’s first four minutes. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes executed a touchdown drive by going 6-7 for 62 yards, moving through the Texas defense with ease. A touchdown toss from Mahomes to Cameron Batson gave the Red Raiders a 7-0 lead.

But Texas would answer just 54 seconds later, scoring on a 4-yard touchdown run from junior D’Onta Foreman. The score was set up by a 52-yard reception from Jake Oliver, who streaked down the middle of the field for a big gain. With over 10 minutes to go in the first quarter, the game was tied at 7-7.

The Longhorn offense would need to keep scoring as Texas Tech scored on its next two trips. A 42-yard field goal put the Red Raiders up 10-7, and they scored again on their next drive.

Texas gained a 14-10 lead following the Tech field goal, scoring on a 16-yard touchdown toss from freshman quarterback Shane Buechele to freshman Collin Johnson.

That lead would evaporate quickly, however, as Mahomes continued to shred the Longhorn defense. He found wide receiver Johnathan Giles for a 3-yard touchdown, giving the Red Raiders a 16-14 lead following a blocked extra point. At the end of the first quarter, Mahomes accumulated 178 yards passing.

Foreman looked to have his second touchdown of the day, pushing the pile all the way to the 1-yard line on third-and-goal from the Red Raider 24-yard line. But before crossing the goal line, Foreman was stripped of the ball by a Tech defender, who scooped the ball and took it 100 yards to the endzone.

The play resulted in a significant swing in the game’s momentum, as the Longhorns went from taking the lead to down nine points. With under eight minutes to play in the first half, Texas Tech led 23-14.

Texas was able to weather the storm, however, scoring on its next possession to make it a 23-21 Red-Raider lead. Buechele found Johnson once again in the back of the end zone, allowing the tall receiver to catch the ball at its highest point.

The Longhorns would score once more before the half, taking the lead on a field goal by kicker Trent Domingue. Heading into the second half in Lubbock, Texas leads 24-23.
