Students lined up to vote at 7 a.m. on Election Day, only to wait in line for more than one hour to cast their vote.

The Peter T. Flawn Academic Center and the University Co-op opened their doors at 7 a.m. for students and members of the public to cast their vote. However, the first vote was cast at 7:26 a.m., and people in line still had a long wait.

“I had an 8 a.m. so I was planning on getting in and getting out before my class, but I decided I was already there so I might as well stick it out,” said dance freshman Addison Norman, who got in line at 7:20 a.m. and finished at 10 a.m. “I figured I would be done by 9 then, but I just kept waiting and waiting.”

Besides complaints of inefficiency, voters also said voting machines were not working properly, causing a bigger delay in the line.

Electrical engineering junior Bryan Leon said technical difficulties should not be happening because of the amount of time the voting centers have had to prepare for Election Day.

“I just think it’s a little ridiculous, especially because how they have the gap between early voting and actual voting days so there should be enough time to work out these technical issues,” Leon said.

Cameron Dehghani, radio-television-film freshman, said the wait could be seen as a potential conspiracy theory.

“I think it’s definitely somewhat worrying that happened on Election Day,” Dehghani said. “If you decided to go all conspiracy theory, you could say, ‘Oh it’s rigged!’ But I don’t really care as long as I get to vote.”

Although voters such as Dehghani were not happy with the delay, some were willing to stand in line and get their vote in.

“I think it could have gone quite faster than it had, but I’m just happy I got to vote,” Dehghani said. “This is the first election I could vote for so I figured I would sit this one out.”
