D'Onta Foreman was arrested on drug and weapons charges on campus early Sunday morning.

Foreman is a Houston Texans rookie and former Texas Longhorns football player. The UT Police Department was the arresting agency, according to jail records.

UTPD spokeswoman Cindy Posey issued a statement to the Austin American-Statesman that said UTPD police first responded to a call, which reported the smell of marijuana coming from three occupied vehicles outside of San Jacinto residence hall on campus, at 12:24 a.m. Sunday.

“Officers arrived on the scene discovered marijuana in each vehicle and also discovered a firearm in one of them,” Posey said.

According to jail records, Foreman was charged with marijuana possession of two ounces or less and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Foreman was taken into custody at about 3 a.m. Sunday and released around noon, according to the records.

Posey told the Statesman that six other male suspects were cited and released for possession of marijuana.

“None of them are UT students, and they are not believed to have UT affiliations,” Posey said.

Sam Bassett, an Austin criminal defense attorney, and Chip Lewis, a Houston criminal defense attorney, who both represent Foreman, released a joint statement.

“D’Onta appreciates the professionalism of the officers involved in his arrest and booking into the Travis County jail,” read the statement. “We are confident this matter will be resolved justly once the state of Texas applies the applicable law to the facts.”

According to the statement, Foreman traveled to Austin to visit friends. “As he was leaving their residence, he was approached by police,” the statement read.

According to the statement, Foreman told the officer he had a legal handgun inside of his vehicle prior to the search of it.

“The handgun was recently purchased by D’Onta and registered in his name,” the statement read. “The handgun was properly secured inside his vehicle as required by Texas law.”

The marijuana belonged to a passenger in Foreman’s vehicle, according to the statement,.

“D’Onta did not use or possess the marijuana,” the statement read. “Upon making his bond, he will submit to urinalysis and confirm he has not used marijuana.”

In April, the Texans picked Foreman as the 89th overall pick in the NFL draft.

“We are aware of a situation involving D’Onta Foreman,” the Texans said via their PR Twitter account. “We are gathering additional information and will have no further comment.”
