Student Government passed a resolution on Tuesday in support of introducing a pilot program to provide a University-funded printing allowance for UT students residing off campus.
The University provides $100 per semester in Bevo Pay for students living on campus, which could be used for different University services including printing, according to University Housing and Dining. The Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering states students within those majors already receive $25 in printing credits at the Learning Resource Center.
Government junior Dylan Avila introduced the bill after realizing the issue lacked student awareness and needed a push from Student Government. The pilot program would distribute $2 into student’s print accounts. Civil, architectural and environmental engineering students would still be eligible for the $2 as long as the students do not live on campus.
“Coming to this university and seeing people negatively impacted by something so small,” Avila said. “I’ve had friends that have failed to print out something because they couldn’t translate their bank info to their UT print system and it cost them a grade.”
The program is disbursing a small amount of money to provide UT time to assess the effectiveness and costs of the initiative, and so it can decide whether to proceed with future funding, Avila said.
“This represents something so much more than just printing,” Avila said. “This shows that students are able to come together to address the issues that impact them and advocate for themselves, for things that are negatively impacting them, and I want to use this campaign as a way for students to contribute that voice.”
