As the 2025 Texas baseball season came to a close almost two weeks ago after falling to UTSA in the Austin Regional, 10 Longhorns entered their names in the transfer portal in the wake of their early departure in the postseason.
The only senior to put his name in the transfer portal, pitcher Ace Whitehead’s departure from Texas does not come as a surprise. Whitehead opted to redshirt his 2025 season after getting season-ending arm surgery.
“The last four years at Texas have been a dream come true,” Whitehead said on his personal X account. “I’ve never been more proud to wear a color than I have been to wear the burnt orange.”
A member of the star-studded 2022 recruiting class, the Lampasas native initially started his career out in the outfield. Making 25 games and one start as a true freshman, he hit .556, but struggled in his sophomore season, going .111 at the plate.
Making 16 appearances on the hill for Texas, starting four, Whitehead compiled a 4–0 record along with one save, posting a 4.10 ERA and 24 strikeouts. As a junior, he emerged as a reliable starter for the Longhorns. Making 10 starts, Whitehead put together respectable numbers, a 4.16 ERA and 72 strikeouts in 94 innings.
Causing some shock, sophomore outfielder Tommy Farmer IV, who was a starter for the majority of the season, was the sixth Longhorn to hit the portal. Playing sparingly in his freshman season at Texas, Farmer IV was given an elevated role in head coach Jim Schlossnagle’s first season in Austin.
Playing 58 games in 2025, Farmer IV recorded 44 hits, 13 doubles, 25 RBIs and a single home run, blasting a shot toward left field during a game against Texas A&M. Out deep, Farmer IV was a consistent ball hawk, reeling in 73 putouts and committing only a single error.
One of two players on the Longhorns roster from the small South Texas town of Sinton, sophomore Jaquae Stewart is the most recent Longhorn to hit the portal and will find his fourth new home in three years.
Stewart posted a .346 batting average along with 15 home runs and 62 RBIs during his lone JUCO year. Injuries to the Texas lineup in the middle of the season allowed Stewart to make a couple of appearances as the designated hitter, but he was unable to replicate his JUCO stats.
In 23 appearances this season and starting 13 for the Longhorns, Stewart had a .149 batting average, hitting one home run, five RBIs and striking out 18 times on 47 at-bats. Stewart did not see any action during the Southeastern Conference Tournament or the Austin Regional.
A contributor to the 2024 campaign, sophomore pitcher Easton Tumis struggled to find a spot in the Longhorns’ rotation despite a depleted staff late in the season, resulting in his entrance to the transfer portal. In his true freshman season, Tumis had 21 relief appearances, putting together a 3–1 record and a 5.08 ERA.
