Dean of Students Katie McGee will transition into an advisory role, and John Dalton, vice president for Student Affairs, is now the acting Dean of Students, according to an email to student leaders on Thursday obtained by the Texan.
Dalton wrote that McGee will transition to advising and assisting him and will work to reevaluate how the Office of the Dean of Students supports students, according to the email. In 2000, Dalton was named the assistant dean of students and has been in various roles within the University for 25 years. He became vice president for Student Affairs in June 2025, overseeing the office and student services such as the Longhorn Wellness Center, University Unions and Recreational Sports, according to the Division of Student Affairs website.
“I want to thank Katie for her leadership and contributions throughout her tenure as Dean of Students,” Dalton wrote.
Katie McGee became the acting Dean of Students in August 2024 after serving as interim dean and associate vice president for Student Affairs for seven months. McGee led the Office of the Dean of Students, which oversees student life, organizations and governance.
In her time as dean, the office formed the Event Readiness and Response team in September 2024, which began managing student expressive activities after pro-Palestine protests in April 2024. In the spring 2025 Campus-Wide election, McGee’s office dismissed a Student Government Supreme Court’s disqualification of the current SG executive alliance, Hudson Thomas and Thierry Chu, for exceeding campaign spending limits. Most recently, McGee oversaw the Longhorn Orientation team’s transition from the Office of Admissions to the Office of the Dean of Students.
McGee did not respond to a request for comment.
“I know many of you have worked directly with Katie and gotten to know her well,” Dalton wrote in the email. “She has worked tirelessly to strengthen the relationship between our student leaders and organizations and our central University administration.”
