In the penultimate week of the College Football Playoff rankings, the inevitable truth was finally revealed.
The playoff committee revealed that Texas will be ranked No. 13 heading into conference championship week, with two spots out of the Top 12 reserved for conference championships that aren’t currently slated within the bracket for an opportunity to compete for a National Championship. Due to the fact that the ACC Champion and Group of Five Champion will be seeded No. 11 and No. 12 in the playoffs, Texas as a bubble team will most likely be left out of playoff seeding.
Texas was one of six teams looking at the final two spots of the playoff bracket. Utah came in at No. 15, Vanderbilt in No. 14, Miami in No. 12 and BYU in No. 11. Miami and BYU are the first and second teams out, respectively. Notre Dame snuck in at No. 10 and Alabama at No. 9.
Texas fans saw three wins and two losses inside the CFP Top 15, with wins against Vanderbilt, No. 8 Oklahoma and No. 7 Texas A&M. The Longhorns’ two Top 10 losses were to No. 1 Ohio State and No. 3 Georgia. Some thought that the three wins would be enough to get the Longhorns into the playoffs, but the committee clearly thought otherwise.
Texas football will now wait for the bowl schedule to be released on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. CT.
