No. 16 Texas women’s tennis hit the road to take on the University of where they completed a 7-0 sweep of the Tigers to improve to 6-3 on the season, and 1-1 in the Southeastern Conference.
With the win, Texas now leads the all-time series against Missouri, 18-1. The Tigers’ lone win was in 2003, where they pulled out a close 4-3 victory in Columbia.
However Missouri couldn’t recreate that home victory more than two decades later, as Texas came out swinging and never let up. The Longhorns drew first blood in doubles play as sophomore Salma Drugdova and freshman Mathilde Ngijol-Carré completed a 6-1 routing of Missouri senior Andrea Artimedi and sophomore Gian Octa.
Freshman Elizabeth Ionescu paired with freshman Christasha McNeil for only the second time this season to take down Missouri sophomore Zoe Lazar and freshman Lara Quaglia, 6-3, clinching the doubles point and giving Texas a 1-0 lead as a team.
Texas sophomore Carmen Herea paired up with freshman Anastasia Abbagnato in a match against Missouri freshman Alex Ackman and sophomore Korina Roso, however, play did not continue after Texas secured the doubles point, so the match was left unfinished at 5-5 in the first set.
Texas continued its pummeling of Missouri in singles play, starting with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 win from Ionescu over Artimedi, followed by McNeil downing Octa, 6-3, 6-4. Herea, who has slipped to No. 3 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, bested Roso, 6-4, 6-4, to build a 4-0 team lead and secure the victory for the Longhorns.
Play continued, and Texas sophomore Eszter Meri bounced back from her singles loss in the Lone Star Showdown with a victory over Ackman, winning a back-and-forth first set and sweeping the second to pull out a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
Ngijol-Carré returned to singles play after being out of the lineup in Texas’ match against Texas A&M to beat Lazar, 6-4, 6-4. To finish off the Longhorns’ domination, Drugdova secured a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Quaglia.
A notable absence from singles play was Abbagnato, who surged from No. 63 to No. 21 in the ITA singles rankings, before suffering a crushing 6-1, 6-1 defeat to the No. 5 player, Texas A&M junior Lucciana Perez, last weekend. Texas freshman Kate Mansfield was also absent from Friday’s singles lineup.
The Longhorns will look to continue their success as they take on Vanderbilt in Nashville on Sunday.
