The Daily Texan has decided to close the comments function on our website for the time being. The comments section, coordinated through Disqus, will no longer be operational on any article or story.
We decided to close comments on our website in light of recent comments made that were either hurtful, unhelpful or made personal attacks, but we have to clarify that this was not a one-time incident. Since the creation of The Daily Texan’s website, commenters have repeatedly left similiarly unhelpful and hurtful comments unchecked and anonymously.
Many major newsrooms across the country have made the same decision we made, as hurtful comments are not exclusive to student publications and their stories. To better support our staff and our efforts, we’ve made the decision to close our comments section.
To clarify, this decision will only affect the comments section on our website, thedailytexan.com. Please continue to leave feedback and comments on our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube) and utilize our COVID-19 questionnaire.
Please direct any pertinent questions to [email protected] and we’ll do our best to answer them in a timely manner.
