UTPD Assistant Chief Shane Streepy will replace Eve Stephens as chief after her abrupt resignation on Friday.
Stephens, who formerly worked for the Austin Police Department, was sworn in as police chief in July 2023, according to a University press release. Before joining UTPD, Streepy also worked for the Austin Police Department.
Brian Davis, a former UT communications employee who now reports for A to Z Sports, reported that Stephens was “pressured” into resigning or would otherwise face termination. The Daily Texan was unable to independently verify those claims.
“Chief Streepy has consistently displayed superior leadership abilities and drive,” Amanda Cochran-McCall, the vice president for Legal Affairs, said in a University statement. “He has guided UT leadership through multiple complex operations and issues, demonstrating a sophisticated understanding of the nuances of university policing and the unique needs of our dynamic and interconnected campus community.”
During the April 29 pro-Palestine demonstration on campus, Streepy sent out multiple dispersal orders to the campus community stating protesters violated state laws, including criminal trespassing. County Attorney Delia Garza has since dropped all criminal trespassing charges against the demonstrators.
Stephens’ resignation is the latest in a string of University administration changes. Earlier this month, Sharon Wood, the executive vice president and provost, stepped down, and Moody Dean Rachel Mersey was named as her interim. The University laid off 19 to 20 communications employees in June and announced a new vice president for marketing and communications.
