Living in the “Live Music Capital” definitely comes with perks, but for those under 21, it can be frustrating to miss out on shows. To help navigate South by Southwest, The Daily Texan put together a list of exciting showcases students can enjoy without worry.
WEST BY WEST CAMPUS
On Friday, 21st Street Co-op will kick off SXSW with their WEST x WEST Campus showcase. This 18+ event aims to celebrate Austin culture, with a portion of the profits going to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. The lineup includes Grocery Bag, Big Wy’s and Los Kurados.
SOUTH BY SOUTH GRASS
Bluegrass fans should stop by Radio East on Saturday for their second annual South by South Grass showcase. Day tickets cost $12.26 and include classic country and folk with performances by the Texas String Assembly, Fennario Flats, Valley Flower and a community jam circle.
BATCH CRAFT BEER & KOLACHES
Batch Craft Beer & Kolaches will host several all age and free events throughout the week, including the KOOP Radio Day Party on Sunday and A&E’s Unofficial Day Party on Tuesday. Try one of their pastries and enjoy music ranging from traditional folk and swing to dreamy indie pop and electronic.
MARSHALL DAY PARTY
Anyone looking to mosh, should head over to Mohawk on Wednesday for the Marshall Day Party featuring punk with Fleshwater, Maruja, Wishy, Urban Heat and Austin’s indie darlings Die Spitz. Free with RSVP and open to all ages, the showcase also includes
Waterloo Records pop-up live screen printing with Feels So Good and free Cold Ones Popsicles!
SOUTH BY SAN SOLEIL
A quick walk from campus, Alienated Majesty Books will collaborate with Sans Soleil Records to bring live music surrounded by good reads. On Wednesday, Sans Soleil artists such as Middle Mass, I Wear Your Chain, French Film, Tamsen and Ensorcell promise lively sets at this free all ages event.
JBL CAMPUS SHOWCASE
Perfect for students not wishing to leave the West Campus area, JBL’s Campus showcase at Victory Lap will be held on Wednesday. The free event boasts performances from local band West 22nd and DJ XANDRA, as well as giveaways and mocktails for all to enjoy.
ANTONE’S 50 X AUSTIN BLUES FEST
In anticipation of the Austin Blues Festival next month, Antone’s Nightclub presents a free 18+ day party on Friday. Enjoy the rich guitar sounds of headliner and Austinite Jackie Venson as well as performances by Gypsy Mitchell, Eve Monsees & Mike Buck, Peterson Brothers Band and Nathan & the Zydeco ChaChas.
SOUTH BY SO WHAT
UT’s very own radio station KVRX will hold their South by So What showcase at Tweedy’s on March 14. The free day-long event features local bands Middle Mass and Bubba Lucky alongside international acts Spitzer Space Telescope, Truck Violence and Mary in the Junkyard. In addition to good tunes, the showcase offers free Voodoo Doughnuts and limited edition t-shirts.
LAST DAY PARTIES
Rounding out the week, Waterloo Records hosts their Last Day Parties at 6th & Lamar from March 11-14. The showcases remain free to attend, open to all ages and feature artists such as Brittany Spencer, Vanessa Zamora and Jo Hill. Their Friday day party also includes a performance from Texas native Charley Crockett, with priority admission given to those who
purchase his latest album “Lonesome Drifter,” set to release that same day.
