Men’s basketball
Looking back: Texas had a roller coaster of a season. Under head coach Rodney Terry, the team struggled in a top-performing Southeastern Conference, going 6–12 overall. While the Longhorns’ tournament hopes were saved by their seven Quad 1 wins and an impressive performance in the SEC tournament, their season ended in disappointment with Xavier’s comeback win in the First Four.
Looking forward: With the hiring of former Xavier head coach Sean Miller, the Longhorns look to implement a culture shift. Miller brought along a pair of Xavier stars and has already pulled some players out of the transfer portal. While Texas lost star freshman Tre Johnson to the NBA draft, impactful players like Jordan Pope, Tramon Mark and Chendall Weaver are back for more.
Women’s basketball
Looking back: Texas made a historic run and went to the Final Four for the first time in 22 years. The Longhorns thrived under head coach Vic Schaefer, going 15–1 in their first year in the SEC. Sophomore forward Madison Booker ended the season with an ample collection of awards, most notably SEC Player of the Year.
Looking forward: The Longhorns lost a couple of key players, most notably senior guard Shay Holle and senior forward Taylor Jones. A few new faces will join the Longhorns, with Arizona sophomore forward Breya Cunningham and Florida Atlantic sophomore center Lovisa Asbrink Hose. Texas will have some lofty expectations to live up to as one of the best four teams in the nation.
Softball
Looking back: Coming off of its second national championship appearance in three years, Texas embarked on its first season in the SEC filled with elite competition. Texas has competed against some of the best teams in the SEC, defeating four ranked opponents and dropping just one series.
Looking forward: Texas looks to close out the final two weeks of the regular season on a strong note to build momentum heading into postseason play. Boasting one of the most talented rosters in the country, the Longhorns have the pieces in place, but improving batting consistency will be key. After finishing as national runner-up twice in the past four years, both the team and its fans are hungry to finally bring home the championship.
Baseball
Looking back: With a completely new look for the baseball program, many questions surrounded the start of the Jim Schlossnagle era. Starting the year at No. 19, Texas exceeded its preseason expectations. The Longhorns have yet to drop a weekend series, collecting major wins over No. 2 LSU, along with a pair of sweeps over No. 3 Georgia and No. 8 Auburn to set them up in a comfortable spot nationally.
Looking forward: Currently No. 1, Texas boasts a 34–5 record with only two losses in the SEC. The Longhorns have four more conference series, including a home series versus rivals Texas A&M and a trip to Norman to take on Oklahoma. In late May, Texas will compete in the SEC Championships, hoping to secure a good bracket position in the national tournament.
