A fire burned down an abandoned motel bordering campus on Sunday evening. The fire is now contained, said Eddie Martinez, an Austin Fire division chief.
The Austin Fire Department and Austin Police Department contained a “significant” fire along 32nd street and the Interstate 35 corridor in less than an hour, Martinez said. Fire investigators are still determining the cause of the fire, he said. No injuries have been reported, though one firefighter is being evaluated, Martinez said.
Smoke could be seen coming from the area, which is located less than a mile from campus. The smoke came from a fire at the motel on I-35 and spread to a neighboring abandoned restaurant, which had not collapsed at time of publication.
Officials turned off power on Block 2900 of I-35 but said power may be affected by the fire. Some power lines were damaged by the fire, Martinez said.
“There was fire coming out of every window and every door of the structure,” Martinez said.
AFD vehicles blocked traffic on the South I-35 Frontage Road. University officials also told students to avoid the area as AFD and UTPD respond, which was sent through an incident alert on Sunday evening.
Martinez said there are 62 firefighters responding to the scene. AFD will continue to monitor fire hot spots within the vicinity of the property, including wooden poles of power lines, he said. Residential areas near the fire were not evacuated, but firefighters were present to check on resident safety.
Michael Byrd, a communications and leadership freshman, said he was giving his out-of-state friend a tour of campus when they saw smoke next to St. David’s Medical Center.
“We were pretty far out,” Byrd said. “We could still feel the heat. It was really hot, we decided to come up in this direction, and there was just flames coming up right next to the hospital.”
