Texas soccer ended a rough 2025 season on a positive note.
On the final matchday of the season, the Longhorns got their fourth win and the first clean sheet of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Ole Miss Rebels, thanks to two first-half goals by underclassmen.
“I think they’ve fought this whole season, really just wanted it for them,” head coach Ange Kelly said. “We challenged them to get after a clean sheet, to score first and to score last, and that is what I told them at the end of the match. … Grateful for the squad, there was so much resilience built this year and life lessons that they won’t forget.”
Texas headed into the locker room with the lead for the second consecutive game, and, for the first time all season, completely dominated and dictated the pace of the game for the first 45 minutes. In one half, the Longhorns ended with 15 shots, five of which hit the goal and a pair that went into the back of the net. Ole Miss managed just five shots, three of which bounced off the frame of the goal.
Freshman forward Ava McDonald needed just 19 minutes to find her ninth goal of the season.
Sophomore defender Chloe Shimkin dribbled the ball deep into the Rebels’ 18-yard box, knocking a cross along the ground to find McDonald’s feet. The freshman dribbled past a defender, and struck the ball across the face of the goal into the back of the net.
Just 20 seconds later, the Longhorns would put themselves up 2-0 on the scoreboard.
After an Ole Miss kickoff, McDonald found herself involved in the action again, gaining possession of the ball after a misplaced pass by Ole Miss. She knocked the ball to freshman forward Audrey Bryant, who returned it to McDonald.
The freshman timed up a through ball to sophomore midfielder Amalia Villarreal, who finished clinically to the bottom right corner for the second Texas goal of the afternoon.
The second half was a repeat of the first; however, Texas could not find the back of the net in the final 45 minutes of the matchup. The Longhorns continued to dominate the game, finishing the matchup with 25 total shots compared to the Rebels’ six.
Texas soccer will end the 2025 season with an overall record of 4-12-1 and 2-8 in conference play. Four Longhorns who are set to graduate were celebrated on senior day, but the Longhorns will return plenty of young players who’ve gained much experience this year that can be used once Texas soccer returns to the field in 2026.
“They built a ton of resilience,” Kelly said. “There’s so many bright spots and I think upon reflection, we’ll start to see more and more.
