Texas men’s golf wins the Lamkin San Diego Classic

Texas men’s golf shook off a tough outing last week in Las Vegas and picked up its third win of the season on Tuesday at the Lamkin San Diego Classic.

The Longhorns finished at 12-under-par after shooting 10-under in the final round to take the nine-shot victory over New Mexico.

Junior Beau Hossler took home another individual title, posting rounds of 69, 70 and 69 to win by two shots at 8-under. The win is Hossler’s third victory in his last four starts, fourth of the season and fifth of his career. Ben Crenshaw and Justin Leonard are the only other Longhorns to have won at least four times in a single season.

Hossler, the No. 1-ranked player in the country, kicked off his fall season with a win at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in October. He started the spring season with a win at the Arizona Intercollegiate in January and tied for first with junior Gavin Hall at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in February.

"This week at San Diego Country Club, we wanted to build on our momentum,” head coach John Fields said. "All of our guys played solidly. I'm really happy and proud for Taylor Funk. His hole-in-one on [hole] 11 will be memorable."

Funk’s hole-in-one was the icing on the cake for what was the best finish of the redshirt sophomore’s career. He carded a career-low 70 in the opening round and followed it up with back-to-back 72s to finish at 2-under and tied for fifth.

Hall fired a 4-under 68 in the final round, Texas’ low round of the tournament, to finish at 3-under overall and tied for third. Hall has picked up his play since the start of the spring season. He tied for ninth in January, tied for first in February and tied for 16th last week.

Sophomore Doug Ghim posted rounds of 76, 73 and 70 to finish in 14th at 3-over. Sophomore Scottie Scheffler shot rounds of 75, 74 and 71 to finish in a tie for 15th at 4-over.

Freshman Steven Chervony competed as an individual and made the second start of his career. Chervony tied for 23rd at 7-over after posting rounds of 76, 75 and 72.

The Longhorns return to action Mar. 21–22 for the Valspar Collegiate at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.
