The Austin Police Department arrested four people in West Campus over the weekend after responding to a burglary call, which resulted in the department discovering meth and equipment to distribute it, according to APD arrest affidavits.
Austin Police responded to a call from visitors from El Paso around 11 p.m. on Saturday about a burglary at Salado Street in West Campus, according to an APD news release and arrest affidavits. The stolen items were tracked to a residence on West 21st Street, where APD also found meth and a possible overdose victim, according to the arrest affidavits.
An officer located four plastic bags with a combined weight of 19.2 grams of meth, according to the arrest affidavit for James Sailors, 40, the West 21st Street residence’s owner. Sailors was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, a first-degree felony.
Police also arrested Octavius Jackson, 36, and Latasha Fletcher, 36, on charges of possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree and state jail felony, respectively, according to their arrest affidavits.
The officer also found an “electronic scale, mirror and plastic dish with residue of suspected crystal (meth) and a large bag of new and empty small plastic baggies commonly used to hold and sell narcotics,” according to Sailors’ arrest affidavit.
When detaining the suspects, officers were informed of a female who was a possible overdose victim inside the residence, according to the APD news release.
“Officers conducted a welfare check and located a woman inside who was going in and out of consciousness,” the news release said. “Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services transported her to a nearby hospital. The female victim made statements saying she had been sexually assaulted and drugged.”
When asked to provide further information, including the claim of sexual assault, the APD public information office said in an email no further information is available due to the sensitive nature of the investigation.
The visitors from El Paso who placed the call had returned to their Airbnb on Salado Street and discovered people inside stealing their belongings. Fletcher and Calvin Guyton, 32, the other person arrested, were both arrested on charges of second-degree felony of burglary of residence, according to their respective arrest records.
Sailors faces up to 99 years if convicted on the first-degree felony charge, according to the Texas Penal Code. Jackson faces up to two years if convicted of the state jail felony, while Fletcher and Guyton face up to 20 years if convicted of their second-degree felonies. No charges have been filed as a result of the statements made by the female potential overdose victim at this time.
