Competition was tough, but the Longhorns proved their worth in North Carolina this weekend.

Of the four girls that competed for the women’s tennis team at the Duke Invitational, senior All-American Aeriel Ellis and sophomore Noel Scott each advanced and won their opening matches of day one.

Ellis earned a quarterfinal berth with a straight set victory while Scott did the same in impressive fashion. The other Longhorns gave a valiant effort but were each defeated leaving Ellis and Scott to stand alone.

On day two, sophomore Noel Scott shined as she reeled off two straight set victories over opponents from Duke and Yale. This setup the All-Big 12 selection for a date with Duke’s Hanna Mar in Sunday’s final. Ellis suffered a straight set loss in her quarterfinal match but came back to win her consolation match earning a bid in the fifth place match Sunday.

Much to the chagrin of the Longhorns, day three saw Scott fall in straight sets in the finals of the Duke Invitational to champion Mar. Ellis fought hard in her consolation match but eventually was defeated in a three set decision.

Juniors Elizabeth Begley and Juliana Gajic, and sophomore Annat Rabinovich were the other three Longhorns to participate in the tournament.

The squad will continue their fall season when they host the Longhorn Invitational on September 21.
