Since 1900, The Daily Texan has been at the center of UT. We have had the privilege of reporting on breaking news, holding those in power accountable and being the voice for our University community — all with the help of students just like you.
We have a semesterly staff of over 300 individuals, 16 unique departments and a reputation as the most award-winning college newspaper in the nation. This publication has a history of doing phenomenal work, but our legacy doesn’t mean we’re done.
At The Daily Texan, our mission is to serve this campus better every day. As our work and the community continue to evolve, we know change begins inside our newsroom with the voices we amplify. Every student on our campus has the right to see themselves reflected in our work.
That starts with you.
You don’t have to have your eyes on a Pulitzer to join the Texan (although 26 former staffers have gone on to win one). There is no journalism experience required. Whatever your skill set or interests, you belong in our newsroom.
For those driven by the chance to bring about change, join my Opinion team as a columnist or illustrator. There will be a wide variety of individuals driven by the opportunity to improve UT and to advocate for their communities.
Keeping the campus informed is an essential function of our paper. So, if breaking news gives you an adrenaline rush, our News department will allow you to keep your fellow Longhorns informed. Or are you more interested in investigative journalism and working on long-form news stories? The Projects department may be the perfect fit.
If film, literature and music are your life, or you are interested in writing feature stories about community members, the Life and Arts department will allow you to write about your more artsy interests.
Reporting from the sidelines. Covering all things Texas Athletics. Getting up close and personal with athletes. Consider applying to our Sports department if you’re up for any of these tasks.
If you can’t let a stray comma slip past, have sharp research skills and a devotion to AP Style, join the Copy department and find out why it’s known as the backbone of our paper.
News is now more digital than ever, and we have six multimedia departments to prove it. If your hand feels empty without a camera, consider applying for our Photo department to hone your photography skills and capture essential moments from behind a lens. Interested in exploring new digital storytelling methods? Our Video and Audio departments will help you train your journalistic eyes and ears.
The Texan’s newest addition, the Data Department, is for those who find analyzing or visualizing datasets appealing. The team has two open positions: data analyst and data designer.
The Newsletter and Social Media departments are for individuals interested in helping connect our work to the UT community daily. For those passionate about making our work accessible to Spanish speakers, our translation department, Texan en Español, is waiting for your application.
We have a more creative side, too. Put your illustration abilities to use by producing comic strips for our Comics department. Our design team is right for you if you have a designer’s eye and are interested in producing flipbook spreads and other graphic elements alongside stories.
Making our newsroom a welcoming place and making our content as respectful as possible is the primary role of our Advocacy and Belonging department. Their team is fitting for anyone passionate about ensuring balanced and fair coverage.
There is a place for you at The Daily Texan, regardless of your background or experience level. As editor-in-chief, I want our newsroom to be a place where every student is welcome. Apply for the Texan this spring. If you have any questions, check out our application guide or email me at [email protected]. If you can’t apply, then sign up for our daily newsletter, follow our work on social media or send us feedback on how we can improve.
This newsroom must be more than a reflection of UT. Be part of the force that shapes it.
Henningsen is an English and advertising senior from Austin, Texas. She is the editor-in-chief.
